& Planning Guide
How to Plan a Muskoka Elopement
Just starting to plan your elopement in Muskoka? Whether you’re local or traveling in, there are a few important things to know as you start dreaming up your perfect day. Here’s a breakdown of what to consider:
How to Get to Muskoka
Muskoka is just a short and scenic drive from many major cities in Ontario, making it an easily accessible elopement destination — whether you’re local or flying in from out of town.
If you’re coming from Toronto or the GTA, Muskoka is about a 2–2.5 hour drive north along Highway 400, depending on your exact destination. Once you reach Barrie, you’ll head onto Highway 11 which winds its way through the heart of Muskoka, passing towns like Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Huntsville.
Traveling from further away? The nearest major airport is Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). From there, you can:
- Rent a car and drive north (ideal if you plan to explore different areas of Muskoka)
- Book a private transfer or shuttle
- In summer months, fly directly into Muskoka Airport (YQA) from select cities — a quick option if available.
No matter how you get here, your Muskoka elopement is sure to start with a beautiful drive through Ontario’s iconic cottage country.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Muskoka
Muskoka is a stunning year-round destination, but each season offers something completely different:
- Spring (April–May): Wildflowers are in bloom, the lakes open begin to thaw, snow melts away and everything comes alive again.
- Summer (June–August): The most popular time to visit — expect warm days, swimmable lakes, and lush green scenery.
- Fall (September–October): Vibrant autumn colours make for absolutely breathtaking backdrops, cooler but enjoyable temperatures and little to no bug.
- Winter (November–March): Ideal for couples dreaming of a snowy, cozy winter elopement, great time for winter activities including skiing / snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and more.
Good To Know: Summer and early fall are the most popular months for a Muskoka elopement — so book early if you want a specific venue or location.
Weather in Muskoka:

Because Muskoka sits 2–3 hours north of Toronto, the weather can be significantly cooler — especially in spring and winter.
Fall: Crisp air, golden leaves, and comfortable daytime temps — a photographer’s dream.
Winter: Cold and snowy with temperatures often below 0°C. Perfect for cozy elopements with snowy photos.
Spring: Cool and unpredictable — but quiet and romantic if you’re into moody forest vibes.
Summer: Warm, sunny, and ideal for outdoor adventures. Lakes are warm enough to swim!
What to Know While Planning Your Muskoka Elopement
- Pack bug spray. From late spring through early fall, Muskoka’s forests and lakes bring out a variety of bugs — especially mosquitoes and blackflies. Be prepared with bug spray to keep your ceremony comfortable and bite-free.
- Book early in peak season. Muskoka is one of Ontario’s most popular summer destinations, especially between May and October. If you’re booking a venue or accommodations — especially for a small group — aim to secure your date at least a few months in advance to avoid disappointment.
- The region is big — plan ahead. Muskoka covers a wide area made up of many towns and lakes. While planning your elopement day, take time to map out where you’ll be exploring, especially if you want to hit multiple scenic spots. Need help with logistics? I’m happy to offer local insight.
- Avoid long weekend traffic. Victoria Day, Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, and Labour Day are especially busy in Muskoka. Expect heavier traffic and limited availability at accommodations. If possible, plan your elopement midweek or outside of those weekends for a quieter, more relaxed (and often more cost effective) experience.

Landscapes in Muskoka:
One of the most incredible things about planning a Muskoka elopement is the landscape itself. This region is famous for its rugged beauty and iconic Canadian scenery, offering the perfect natural backdrop for your wedding day.
From:
- Windswept pines
- Smooth rocky shorelines
- Freshwater lakes and hidden beaches
- Lush old-growth forests
- The iconic pink-and-grey rock of the Canadian Shield
- Peaceful waterfalls and winding rivers
…Muskoka offers an endless variety of jaw-dropping backdrops for elopement photos and quiet moments together in nature.
No matter the season, you’ll find something truly magical in Muskoka’s wild beauty — and that’s exactly what makes it such a special place to say your vows.

How to Get Married in Muskoka
Getting married in Muskoka is a simple process with just a few legal steps to ensure your marriage is recognized in Ontario. Whether you’re planning a lakeside ceremony, a cozy forest elopement, or a celebration at a rustic cottage, here’s everything you need to know to make your Muskoka elopement official — from getting your marriage license to securing an officiant and witnesses.
- Step 1: Apply for Your Ontario Marriage License
To legally marry in Muskoka, you’ll need a valid Ontario Marriage License. It’s valid for 90 days and can be used anywhere in the province — so even if you don’t get it in Muskoka, you’re good to go..
You can apply for your license at any of the following locations in the Muskoka region:- Bracebridge
- Gravenhurst
- Huntsville
Good to Know: Most offices issue the license on the same day, but call ahead to check hours and requirements, and try to apply a few days before your ceremony in case of delays.
- What You’ll Need to Apply:
- Two pieces of government-issued ID per person (one must be a photo ID)
- Proof of divorce (if applicable) — you’ll need your original or court-certified final decree
- Application form (can often be filled out online and brought in)
- License fee — varies by municipality (usually around $125–$150)
Find detailed info on documents and forms at the Service Ontario marriage license page.
- Hire an Authorized Officiant:
To be legally married in Ontario (and during your Muskoka elopement), your ceremony must be performed by a registered marriage officiant. This can be:- A licensed non-denominational or religious officiant
- A judge or justice of the peace
I’m always happy to help connect couples with amazing local officiants who align with your vibe — whether you’re looking for something traditional, spiritual, or totally unique to you.
- Arrange for Two Witnesses:
Ontario law requires two witnesses over the age of 18 to be present at your ceremony. If you’re eloping just the two of you, no worries — I can act as one of your witnesses, and we can help source another (sometimes even a vendor like your videographer or a local friend can step in).
Legal Requirements to Get Married in Muskoka (Ontario):
- No waiting period or blood test is required
- Both people must be at least 18 years old
- Neither party can be currently married to someone else
- You do not need to be an Ontario resident
