Unless you live locally in the beautiful country of Iceland you will have to take a plane to get here.

Icelandair and PLAY Airlines offer direct flights to KEF from several major cities. Here are some common routes:

How to Get Around Iceland
Once you arrive, you’ll need to decide on transportation. Renting a vehicle is the best way to explore Iceland, as public transportation is limited and taxis can be expensive and wont get you around the entire island should you want to do the ring road. Here are the options I recommend for exploring Iceland before, during your elopement and after:
Renting A Car
For those who want to explore Iceland on their own free time without being stuck on a tour schedule, but have accommodations already booked renting a car in Iceland is the perfect option.
- Flexibility: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Most major car rental companies operate at KEF Airport. I have used Blue Car Rental for reliable service, great rates and transparent insurance coverage.
- 4×4 Vehicles: If you plan to visit the highlands or venture onto Iceland’s F-roads, a 4×4 is required. A Land Rover Defender is a fun and rugged option for adventurous couples.
- Gas Prices & Road Conditions: Gas is expensive in Iceland, and weather conditions can change rapidly. Always check road conditions at road.is before heading out.
Renting A Campervan

Best Time of Year to Elope in Iceland
Iceland offers stunning landscapes year-round, but the best season for your elopement depends on the experience you want, if you have bucket list destinations you are hoping to visit, where in the country you want to travel to as well as what your budget looks like!
Summer (June-August)
- Pros: Summer boats the midnight sun where the sun doesn’t set or when it does it’s not for very long! This gives you so many more endless opportunities to do a multi location elopement. As well, you can also sleep in, go out later in the day and stay out into the evening and have some of the more popular tourist attractions with less people as people head in for dinner / bed. The landscape in summer also is what you see in so many images of lush green landscapes, accessible highlands and milder weather.
- Cons: Summer is peak tourist season so we often consider avoiding super popular tourist spots unless going early in the morning or later in the evening (which is possible from the midnight sun!). The prices are at their highest across the country as well so something to consider when planning your budget.
Fall (September-October)
- Pros: In the fall it is considered shoulder season for Iceland. This brings fewer crowds, stunning autumn colours, a chance to see the Northern Lights (although your best chance is in the winter) as well as more affordable travel costs.
- Cons: Some highland roads start closing in mid-September due to weather conditions.
Winter (November-March)
- Pros: Winter in Iceland is truly magical. The snow covered landscapes, less crowds, the chance to see the northern lights, ice caves are fully formed and accessible for tours as well as it is probably at its most affordable time of year to visit Iceland.
- Cons: Short daylight hours (only 4 hours of daylight on the Winter Solstice) so something to consider when planning a winter elopement it may need to be 2 days to accomodate multiple locations. Additionally, weather can truly be unpredictable from snow to rain and winds also causing the roads to not always be the easiest to drive. Lastly, Westfjords and highland areas are inaccessible.
Spring (April-May)
- Pros: Want to see the waterfalls at peak flow from melting snow then spring is the perfect time of year to elope in Iceland! Along with lots of full waterfalls Spring brings fewer tourists and landscapes transition from winter to summer showcasing the start of everything beginning to turn green again.
- Cons: Some remote roads may still be impassable in early spring which is completely weather dependant and changes every year.
Most Popular & Affordable Times to Visit
- Most Popular: June through August is peak travel season due to pleasant weather and accessibility.
- Most Affordable: November through March offers lower airfare and accommodation rates, though winter travel requires more planning.
How to Get Married in Iceland
Getting married in Iceland involves a few important legal steps to ensure your marriage is recognized, but it is straightforward and easier than some countries! Below is a detailed breakdown of everything you need to know, including how to get your marriage license and certificate, officiants, and legal requirements.
- Get a Certificate of Marital Status for Both Parties 12 Weeks Prior to your Ceremony
- If your country does not issue a Certificate of marital status, you need to bring a certified confirmation from the relevant authority stating that neither person is legally married.
- If either person has been married before, additional documents must be submitted, such as divorce papers. If the previous marriage ended with the passing of a spouse, documentation must be submitted, confirming the end of the estate’s settlement.
- Complete your Marriage Notification

These appointments are normally about 5 minutes long, but must be considered when planning your arrival prior to your elopement

- Cannot be already married to someone else
- Proof that you are visiting Iceland legally – this can be done through the form of plane tickets, stamps on your passport or a valid visa.
- There is no residency requirement in Iceland, so non-residents can get married in the province without needing to establish legal residency.
- Officiants and Witnesses: To get legally married in Iceland you must have an officiant who is registered to perform marriages, as well as two witnesses over the age of 18 present during the ceremony. *Your photographer can be one of your witnesses!* The District Commissioners Office can also sometimes provide witnesses upon request.

The most amount of snow arrives to Northern Iceland in the winter making the road conditions hit or miss depending on the weather. There are options to fly into the capital of the north, Akureyri, and rent a car from here to travel around in any season should you not want to travel the entire ring road.
The Westfjords
The Westfjords is a large peninsula in the northwestern part of Iceland which is the least populated part of the country, but it is absolutely breathtaking! Sitting on the Denmark Straight and faces the east coast of Greenland. It is connected to the rest of the country by a 7km wide isthmus. With untouched landscapes, fjords and small settlements dotted throughout the region is like any other in the country. This is the place for the true adventurer at heart.

Snowfall is extremely heavy in the region and sometimes can see the region get cut off from the rest of the country in the winter. The roads are not regularly maintained due to the small population in the region so it is recommended to only plan your Iceland elopements in the Westfjords in the summer months.
