The best part about these landscapes are so many of them are easily accessible by an easy walk to the location! Iceland Elopement Guide
How to get to Iceland
Unless you live locally in the beautiful country of Iceland you will have to take a plane to get here.
Flights to Iceland
Icelandair and PLAY Airlines offer direct flights to KEF from several major cities. Here are some common routes:
- Toronto (YYZ) → Keflavík (KEF): ~5.5-hour direct flight via Icelandair, Air Canada or PLAY Airlines.
- New York (JFK/EWR) → Keflavík (KEF): ~5-6-hour direct flight via Icelandair, Delta, or PLAY Airlines.
- Boston (BOS) → Keflavík (KEF): ~5-hour direct flight via Icelandair or PLAY Airlines.
- Seattle (SEA) → Keflavík (KEF): ~7-hour direct flight via Icelandair.
- Chicago (ORD) → Keflavík (KEF): ~6-hour direct flight via Icelandair.
- London (LHR/LGW) → Keflavík (KEF): ~3-hour direct flight via Icelandair, British Airways, or PLAY Airlines.
- Amsterdam (AMS) → Keflavík (KEF): ~3-hour direct flight via Icelandair or KLM.
If you’re traveling from another location, consider a layover in a major European or North American hub before continuing to Iceland.
How to Get Around Iceland
Once you arrive, you’ll need to decide on transportation. Renting a vehicle is the best way to explore Iceland, as public transportation is limited and taxis can be expensive and wont get you around the entire island should you want to do the ring road. Here are the options I recommend for exploring Iceland before, during your elopement and after:

Renting A Car
For those who want to explore Iceland on their own free time without being stuck on a tour schedule, but have accommodations already booked renting a car in Iceland is the perfect option.
- Flexibility: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Most major car rental companies operate at KEF Airport. I have used Blue Car Rental for reliable service, great rates and transparent insurance coverage.
- 4×4 Vehicles: If you plan to visit the highlands or venture onto Iceland’s F-roads, a 4×4 is required. A Land Rover Defender is a fun and rugged option for adventurous couples.
- Gas Prices & Road Conditions: Gas is expensive in Iceland, and weather conditions can change rapidly. Always check road conditions at road.is before heading out.

Renting A Campervan
For couples who want a road trip-style adventure, renting a campervan is a great way to combine transportation and accommodation. Cozy Campers is an excellent choice for comfortable and well-equipped vans that we have used and loved. Benefits include:
- Flexibility: Have way more flexibility to explore, choose your favourite campground close by to your elopement location
- 4×4 Options: Some of the vans are 4×4 allowing you to reach different spots in Iceland.
- Onboard Wifi; You can rent a wifi hub from them to be able to have service on your trip around Iceland.
- Cost Savings: Save on accommodation as well as eating out as you can cook in your campervan!
- Built-in Essentials: Many vans come with heating, kitchen equipment, and cozy sleeping areas.

Other Transportation Options:
- Private Drivers & Tours: Ideal for those who prefer a guided experience without driving themselves.
- Domestic Flights: Available to some remote locations but not necessary for most travellers.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Iceland
Iceland offers stunning landscapes year-round, but the best season for your elopement depends on the experience you want, if you have bucket list destinations you are hoping to visit, where in the country you want to travel to as well as what your budget looks like!
Summer (June-August)
- Pros: Summer boats the midnight sun where the sun doesn’t set or when it does it’s not for very long! This gives you so many more endless opportunities to do a multi location elopement. As well, you can also sleep in, go out later in the day and stay out into the evening and have some of the more popular tourist attractions with less people as people head in for dinner / bed. The landscape in summer also is what you see in so many images of lush green landscapes, accessible highlands and milder weather.
- Cons: Summer is peak tourist season so we often consider avoiding super popular tourist spots unless going early in the morning or later in the evening (which is possible from the midnight sun!). The prices are at their highest across the country as well so something to consider when planning your budget.
Fall (September-October)
- Pros: In the fall it is considered shoulder season for Iceland. This brings fewer crowds, stunning autumn colours, a chance to see the Northern Lights (although your best chance is in the winter) as well as more affordable travel costs.
- Cons: Some highland roads start closing in mid-September due to weather conditions.
Winter (November-March)
- Pros: Winter in Iceland is truly magical. The snow covered landscapes, less crowds, the chance to see the northern lights, ice caves are fully formed and accessible for tours as well as it is probably at its most affordable time of year to visit Iceland.
- Cons: Short daylight hours (only 4 hours of daylight on the Winter Solstice) so something to consider when planning a winter elopement it may need to be 2 days to accomodate multiple locations. Additionally, weather can truly be unpredictable from snow to rain and winds also causing the roads to not always be the easiest to drive. Lastly, Westfjords and highland areas are inaccessible.
Spring (April-May)
- Pros: Want to see the waterfalls at peak flow from melting snow then spring is the perfect time of year to elope in Iceland! Along with lots of full waterfalls Spring brings fewer tourists and landscapes transition from winter to summer showcasing the start of everything beginning to turn green again.
- Cons: Some remote roads may still be impassable in early spring which is completely weather dependant and changes every year.
Most Popular & Affordable Times to Visit
- Most Popular: June through August is peak travel season due to pleasant weather and accessibility.
- Most Affordable: November through March offers lower airfare and accommodation rates, though winter travel requires more planning.

Essential Iceland Travel Tips for Your Elopement
Top Things to Pack for Your Iceland Elopement
- Warm, Waterproof Layers – A high-quality rain jacket and thermal base layers are essential year-round.
- Sturdy Hiking Boots – Many elopement locations require some walking over rocky or uneven terrain.
- Hand and Foot Warmers – Essential for winter elopements and cooler months.
- Gloves, Hats, and Scarves – Even in summer, the wind can be strong and chilly.
- Microspikes for Boots – If you’re eloping in winter, icy paths and roads make these a must-have.
- Headlamp or Flashlight – Essential if you plan to elope during winter when daylight is limited.
- Travel Adapter (Type C & F) – Iceland uses European-style plugs.
- Reusable Water Bottle – Iceland’s tap water is some of the cleanest in the world.
Driving & Transportation in Iceland
- 4×4 Rentals Are Recommended – Many elopement locations require a 4WD vehicle, especially if you’re venturing into the highlands or F-roads.
- Gas is Expensive – Plan for higher fuel costs; gas stations are sparse in remote areas.
- Strict Speed Limits & Fines – Speed limits are strictly enforced, and fines are high.
- No Off-Road Driving – Driving off marked roads is illegal and can damage Iceland’s fragile ecosystem.
- Watch for Weather Warnings – Icelandic weather changes quickly; always check road conditions at road.is.
Best Time to See the Northern Lights
- The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are visible from September to March, with peak activity in December and January.
- For the best chance, head to areas with minimal light pollution, such as Thingvellir National Park or the Westfjords.
- Cloud cover can affect visibility—check the aurora forecast on Vedur.is.
Payment & Currency in Iceland
- Currency: Icelandic Króna (ISK).
- Credit Cards Accepted Almost Everywhere – You likely won’t need cash at all.
- Tipping is Not Expected – Service charges are usually included in pricing.
Weather & Daylight Considerations
- Summer (June-August): 24-hour daylight in June (Midnight Sun), warmer temperatures, and easiest travel conditions.
- Fall (September-October): Fewer tourists, cooler temperatures, and the beginning of Northern Lights season.
- Winter (November-March): Snow-covered landscapes, best Northern Lights viewing, but fewer accessible locations.
- Spring (April-May): Waterfalls are at their strongest from melting snow, and days start getting longer.
Leave No Trace & Protecting Iceland’s Nature
Iceland has a fragile ecosystem, so respecting the environment is key:
- Stick to Marked Trails – Walking off-path damages moss and landscapes that take decades to recover.
- Do Not Stack Rocks (Cairns) – These are historical markers, and adding to them disturbs nature.
- Use Designated Parking Areas – Avoid pulling over randomly on roads.
- Pack Out Your Trash – Even biodegradable items can harm wildlife.
By following these travel tips, you’ll have an incredible, stress-free elopement while respecting Iceland’s natural beauty!
