There’s something really special about documenting a family in a season that won’t last forever. For this family it was some of their last months as a family of five before their next little brother joined their crew. This rainy day farm lifestyle family photography session in Ontario — a home full of warmth, character, and the kind of charm that only comes with time. With three kids already filling the space with energy and a fourth on the way, this season felt full in every sense of the word.
And instead of trying to control it… we leaned into it.
What Farm Lifestyle Family Photography Really Looks Like
If you’ve ever been drawn to farm lifestyle family photography, this is exactly what it can feel like.
No pressure. No perfectly posed moments.
Just your real life, documented in a way that feels honest and nostalgic.
We spent the afternoon doing exactly what they would normally do together:
- snacks around the table
- kids climbing, laughing, and being completely themselves
- slow, quiet moments in between
- bath time together
Letting Kids Be Kids
Inside the restored farmhouse, the light poured in through the windows, wrapping everything in that soft, lived-in glow.
The kids climbed onto the table, crumbs everywhere, giggling between bites.
They crawled across the floor, turned the couch into a jungle gym, and filled every corner of the house with energy and love.
Both mom and dad joined in on the joyful chaos both inside and out – laughing, smiling and enjoying every second together with their sweet family.
And that’s exactly what made it so meaningful.
Because those are the moments you don’t realize you’ll miss until they’re gone.
Embracing the Rain
Then the rain came. And instead of heading inside — we ran toward it.
Barefoot, soaked, laughing — the kind of moment most people would try to avoid… but ended up being one of the most memorable parts of their session. We ran through puddles, cozied up in their vintage family car, let the kids get messy, and documented it all exactly as it unfolded. Out on their farm in Ontario, with space to explore and nowhere to rush off to, the kids were free to just be kids.
And those are the moments that make farm lifestyle family photography feel so special — it’s rooted in real life, not perfection.
Ending the Day in the Most Real Way During this Farm Lifestyle Family Photography Shoot
We ended the session the way so many real days end — in the bath.
Three kids squeezed into the deep soaker tub, water splashing, laughter echoing through the house. It was messy. Loud. Joyful. And perfectly imperfect. Mom + Dad wrapped them in their matching white towels to cozy them up, Pearl the sweet little girl found a lady bug crawling around the bathroom and made friends with it and then we wrapped up the day jumping and snuggling on the bed, all 5 of them.
“But what if my kids don’t cooperate?”
One of the most common things parents say before a session like this is:
“What if my kids don’t listen?”
“What if it’s chaotic?”
“What if it’s stressful?”
And the truth is — it might be a little bit chaotic. But that’s actually the point. These sessions aren’t about perfectly behaved kids or picture-perfect moments. They’re about creating space for your kids to be exactly who they are — and documenting it in a way that still feels beautiful. With having two children of my own I am very used to kids and learning when we need to take a break, have a snack, etc. Every moment is worthy of being documented because this is such a short time in your life you will welcome the opportunity to look back on your days with your family.
How sessions like this actually work
A big part of what makes farm lifestyle family photography and all family sessions for that matter work is I don’t walk into your home expecting your kids to sit still and smile.
Instead, I guide your session in a way that feels natural and low pressure:
- gentle prompts instead of rigid posing
- following your kids’ energy instead of forcing moments
- building in time for snacks, breaks, and resets
- letting real moments unfold instead of interrupting them
Your job isn’t to control your kids.
It’s just to be with them.
What parents are always surprised by
Most parents leave a session like this saying:
“That felt way easier than I expected.” “The kids had so much fun.”
Because when the pressure is removed:
- kids don’t feel like they have to perform
- parents can actually be present
- and the moments happen naturally
Even the “chaotic” parts — the jumping, the mess, the noise — often become the most meaningful images.
These are the moments that matter.
Not the perfectly posed ones — but the in-between, joy-filled pieces of your everyday life together.
The way your kids climb all over you. The way your home feels in this season. The way your family exists right now — before everything changes again. If you’re drawn to a farm lifestyle family photography session where we capture your family as you are — at home, outdoors, in the middle of real life — I’d love to document this season for you.
